ORCHESTRA AT CCHS
Remember the old mellow dance tunes, those that made couples swing and sway? LITTLE LEAGUE GOLF TOURNAMENT
The 5th Annual Gordonsville Little League Golf Tournament will be held at Shenandoah Crossing Golf Course on Friday, April 4. (Rain date: Friday, April 11.) The four-man team, captain’s choice tournament will be held as a fundraiser, with all proceeds going towards improving baseball and girls softball to more than 175 Orange County kids ages 5 to 17. BIG COUNTRY BREAKFAST
The Brightwood Ruritan Club’s Big Country Breakfast will be served from 7-11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at the group’s clubhouse, just off U.S. 29 at Route 607. This all-you-can-eat meal features warm fellowship and lots of fresh-off-the-grill pancakes, sausage, sausage gravy, biscuits, fried apples, coffee and orange juice. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children younger than 12. For $1 more, adults can add scrambled eggs and children can do the same for 50 cents. TURKEY HUNT
Cedar Mountain Youths, Inc. special youth wild turkey hunt is April 5 from 6 a.m. to 12-noon. Requirements are: participants must have attended the March classroom session, youth must be 10-15 years of age and accompanied by a responsible adult, participants must have completed Virginia Hunter Education Course and have all required Virginia hunting licenses. OCC&B CONCERTS
“The Sounds of Spring,” a musical offering, will be presented April 5-6 by the Orange Community Chorus and Band. The Community Chorus is directed by Al Packard and accompanied by Barbara Packard. Choral selections will include traditional American selections. The Community Band will present musical selections for the concert band as well as traditional marches. The band is directed by Bob Hamrick. The Saturday, April 5 performance will be at Lake of the Woods Church at 7 p.m. and the Sunday, April 6 concert at Orange County High School Auditorium at 4 p.m. Both concerts are free, however a free-will donation will be accepted at Sunday’s concert.

SPRING CLEANUP
The towns of Orange and Gordonsville will pick up items between Monday, April 7 and Friday, April 18. Residents are encouraged to place rubbish and appliances at curbside for pickup. No tires or hazardous materials will be collected, including batteries, oil, paints, solvents and etc. The town of Gordonsville will not pick up tree limbs larger than 3-inches in diameter.
ORANGE PARKS/RECREATION
Orange Parks and Recreation is sponsoring the Mature Adult Activity Club (MAAC). The group is open to all mature adults and meets at the Town of Orange Public Works Community Room at 9 a.m. On April 8, Chris Honenberger will speak on advance medical directives and estate planning. ORANGE COUNTY FREE CLINIC
The Orange County Free Clinic, a nonprofit community-based program with an all-volunteer medical staff, provides primary health care and limited dental services to citizens of Orange County with low incomes who are uninsured or underinsured. In addition to medical and dental care, medication assistance is also available through an on-site representative from Rappahannock-Rapidan Medication Assistance Program. The clinic is open every Tuesday, (April 8) between 5-7 p.m. and is located in the Orange County Health Department Building at 450 N. Madison Road. Call 672-0793 for more information.

YOUNG AT HEART CLUB
The Young at Heart Club meets every Wednesday, (April 9, we will play bingo followed by a spaghetti luncheon) of the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at East Orange Ruritan Building at the intersection of Routes 20 and 522. DAR BUS TRIP
The Susannah Chandler Chapter, DAR, is hosting a bus trip to Mt. Vernon on Wednesday, April 9. We will leave the Lake of the Woods lower parking lot at 8:15 a.m. and return around 4 p.m. The cost per person is $53; this includes the bus, admission to Mt. Vernon and lunch at the Mt. SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC
The Orange County Humane Society is coordinating a spay/neuter run to the Harrisonburg Spay/Neuter Clinic on Friday, April 11. Animals will be transported from Orange, left overnight and returned to Orange County Animal Shelter parking lot April 12 at 8:30 a.m. Cat neuters are $40; dog neuters and cat spays are $60 and dog spays are $70 regardless of pet size. Rabies shots will be $8 and given to all pets who do not have proof of a current vaccination. These are terrific prices for these services and the surgery is important, with kitten and puppy season around the corner. Reservations are required to get your pet on this transport; call Orange County Humane Society’s voicemail at 540-672-0069 to reserve a place for your pet. STATE PAGEANT
The Woodberry Cemetery Association, Gordonsville, will sponsor a State Pageant April 12 at 4 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, Gordonsville. Please come and support the pageant.

DAR TO MEET

WALK FOR LIFE
Orange Pregnancy Center will be holding its annual Walk for Life Saturday, April 12 at Taylor Park. The Pregnancy Center in Orange has served over 1,200 visits by young women and teens within our community in the past four years. The walk is a family fun-event with clowns, face-painting, music and food. IMPORTANT TAX NOTICE
Congress has approved and the President has signed the bill to provide a stimulus payment to approximately 130 million taxpayers with qualifying earned income. However, individuals who might not otherwise be required to file a 2007 tax return must do so this year to receive the stimulus payment. If you do not normally file, or have a tax liability, you must file taxes for 2007 to become eligible for this stimulus payment. If you have already filed you do not need to do anything else. Your stimulus payment will be sent to you in early May. You may make an appointment to have your return prepared free of charge by the AARP-Tax Wise Volunteers by calling 672-1361 for the town of Orange site and 972-0350 for the Lake of the Woods site.

FREE TAX SERVICE
AARP, in conjunction with the IRS and with the assistance of Virginia Cooperative Extension, is sponsoring free tax preparation for taxpayers with low and middle incomes, with special attention given to senior citizens (60 and older). All returns, prepared by trained and certified counselors, will be filed on-site electronically. Bring a copy of last year’s tax return, all W-2s, 1099 forms, Social Security cards for all individuals listed on the tax return, and any other documentation for income and deductions. A valid picture ID is also required for the taxpayer. The tax sites have opened and will continue through April 12. The tax site in Orange is in the Sedwick Building, across from McDonald’s, and is open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursdays from 1-5 p.m.; call 672-1361 for an appointment. The tax site at Lake of the Woods (in the Holcomb Building, just inside LOW main gate) is open on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 972-0350 for an appointment.

AARP TO MEET
Orange Chapter 5373 of AARP will meet Monday, April 14 at 1 p.m. at Orange County Rescue Squad building for the regular monthly meeting. Kelly Southard of Orange County Rescue Squad will present the program. The community service project for April are spiral notebooks and three-ring binders with paper for Orange Elementary School. Gordon-Barbour Elementary School PTO spring fling carnival fundraiser will be April 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s spring carnival includes the following: Dedication ceremony, gift of carnival games made and given by Barboursville Ruritans; singing performance by Gordon-Barbour Elementary Singing Bulldogs and karate demonstrations by Ron Craddock Karate Academy. GCC REUNION

Habitat for Humanity is making it easier than ever for folks to donate ‘idle vehicles’ to “Cars for Homes.” If you have an old vehicle setting around (it doesn’t have to run) call 877-277-4344 to make arrangements to have it picked up or email carsforhomes.org. Put your idle car to work helping families build homes. You get rid of the vehicle; get a tax write-off for the donation and Habitat puts the car to good use by exchanging it for money to build homes for deserving families. PLASTIC RECYCLING
Orange Elementary School is collecting plastic material as part of a contest sponsored by Harris Teeter and Trex. The school is asking community members to drop off household plastics at a special box in the school lobby. Items collected include: plastic grocery bags, newspaper bags, dry cleaning bags, plastic wrap around paper towels and toilet paper, bubble wrap, stretch wrap used on pallets. Food plastic wrap cannot be accepted. The school could win a Trex bench (made of recycled materials) and $500.

PIANIST IN CONCERT
The Chopin Foundation of the United States and Premier Virginia Properties will present 18-year-old pianist from Poland, Jacek Kortus on his world piano tour, the youngest finalist of the 2005 International Chopin Piano Competition held in Warsaw, Poland. The fourth annual Chopin in Barboursville includes a children’s concert Wednesday, May 7 at 6 p.m. and on Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m. the premier concert The program includes Frederick Chopin and Franz Liszt. The concerts will be held at Barboursville Vineyards, 17655 Winery Road in Barboursville. The Thursday premier concert and champagne reception is $75 per person (black-tie optional) and the Wednesday children’s concert is $15 per child under 17 and $25 per adult. A WORK IN PROGRESS

NARFE CHAPTER TRIP
On June 4-5 the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 1885 at Lake of the Woods is sponsoring a trip to Brandywine Valley, Wilmington, Delaware. BLUEGRASS JAM
The All-American Bluegrass Jam will be June 12-14 at Booster Park, Route 20, Orange. This will be the sixth year for the festival and is co-sponsored by Orange County Boosters. You will hear three days of great bluegrass featuring The Grascals, Claire Lynch, Ralph Stanley II, George Clark & Dixie Flyer, Michelle Nixon, Wildwood Valley Boys, Carolina Sonshine, Dark Hollow, Bill Yates, Jay Armsworthy, the Kirk Family, Courtney Hollow and Little Mountain Boys. Show times are Thursday, potluck supper at 4:45 p.m. (bring a covered-dish) Boosters will provide ham, turkey or beef. Shows run from 5:45 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and on Saturday from 12-noon to 10:30 p.m. Ticket prices for Thursday and Friday $25 and Saturday $30; a three-day ticket through May 30 is $60. Children 12 and under free with parent and ages 13-17 half-price with parent. New pavilion in front of stage, rain or shine event; food will be available daily at the park and rough camping is free.
