DAR TO MEET

GFOL BOOK SALE/FUNDRAISER
The Gordonsville Friends of the Library will be holding a special fundraising book sale Oct. 4 at the site of the new library building, formerly St. Marks Catholic Church on Main Street from 9-4:30 p.m.  Janet Martin, local author will be there for a book-signing, from 10 a.m.-12 a.m. with her book about a town with a circle, called The Christmas Swap. Also, Rocky the horse, who will be raffled Nov. 15 to a deserving home, (or winner will win $1,000) will be on the Gordonsville Circle that day. LOW LIONS YARD SALE
Everybody is a winner at the annual Lake of the Woods Lions Club yard sale Saturday, Oct. 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Germanna Community College parking lot. Those who attend can get some terrific deals - bargains on thousands of items that have been donated to the Lions Club over the past nine months. The Lions Club wins, too, as all proceeds go to its benevolence fund to support a wide variety of charitable activities throughout the coming year.

RAD KIDS
Orange County Sheriff’s Office will be sponsoring a free RAD Kids safety education class with instructor Donna Rodrique. The class is for ages 3½ through 12 years old. STAGE ALIVE COMMUNITY CONCERT
The Richmond Symphony Orchestra appears on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. in the Culpeper County High School Auditorium.  This is a full, “Masterworks” concert under the baton of maestro Daniel Meyer. If you are not a season ticket holder and want to come, we will try to squeeze you in. For the first time in memory Stage Alive, Community Concerts are sold out! This means that we are unable to sell additional season tickets.  Because there are usually “no-shows” for every concert, single admission tickets for future concerts will be sold on a “space available” basis ten minutes before curtain time.

RVFD OPEN HOUSE

ST. THOMAS EPISCOPAL CHURCH RECITAL
There will be an organ recital at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The guest artist for this event is Mr. Wallace Hornady, master of music at Woodberry Forest School. Mr. Hornady is a graduate of Bellhaven College and holds the master of music degree from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. Before coming to Woodberry, he served as assistant director of the American Boychoir. His program will feature works by J.S. Bach, Cesar Frank and Daniel Locklair, among others. CULPEPER ALZHEIMER’S GROUP
The Alzheimer’s Support Group will meet Oct. 16 from 10 to 12-noon at Amerisist Assisted Living Facility, 215 Southridge Parkway, Culpeper (540-825-4500) and every third Thursday of the month. BLUEGRASS/GOSPEL MUSIC

GOLF TOURNAMENT

DIABETES HEALTH FAIR
There will be a FREE diabetes health fair at the Madison County Fire Hall Tue., Oct. 21 from 5-7p.m. Many exhibitors will be on hand to share information on diabetes management, cholesterol management, nutrition, exercise, relaxation, foot care and blood pressure management. Jill York will then speak about diabetes care and management. While the event is free it is requested that you bring a canned food item to be donated to the local food bank. BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Brooke Wallace Captain’s Choice benefit golf tournament will be held Friday, Oct. 24 at Meadows Farms Golf Course in Locust Grove. Proceeds from this tournament will go toward the Brooke Wallace Trust Fund. Brooke is five months old and was born with biliary atresia. This trust fund was established to offset some of the medical expenses associated with this rare liver disease. She is in need of a liver transplant and is in the process of an evaluation to be placed on a donor list. FAIR MASQUERADE BALL
The Orange County Fair will have a Masquerade Ball Oct. 25 at Gordonsville Fire Hall, with music by Silver Creek, a silent auction, cash-bar, prizes and fun. BENEFIT GOLF TOURAMENT
Orange and Madison County 4-H invite you to support the Denny Wayland Memorial Fund and local 4-H programs by participating in the third annual Denny Wayland Memorial Captain’s Choice Golf Tournament, Mon., Nov. 3 at Greene Hills Club golf course near Stanardsville. AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM
The AARP Tax-Aide program needs volunteers in the Orange area from Feb. 1 to April 15, to assist middle and low-income area residents in preparing their income tax returns. Volunteers will receive training in basic computerized income tax preparation during December at Lake of the Woods and must pass an IRS approved exam. You need not to an AARP member to volunteer. RAPIDAN BETTER HOUSING
Rapidan Better Housing is now accepting applications for its housing repair assistance program to include installing first-time wells and drain fields. Homeowners must be income-eligible, live full time in their home and be able to get an Orange County Health Department permit for a needed well or drain field. RRCSB-AAA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Protective Money Management Volunteer Program of Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services Board/Area Agency on Aging is looking for volunteers in Orange County to assist seniors and clients of the agency with financial management. This program assists senior citizens and clients with limited income who may be having difficulty paying bills or managing their finances. The Protective Money Management Program is sponsored in part by AARP. Volunteer money managers are carefully selected, trained and monitored. Each volunteer is paired with a client who needs assistance with financial affairs. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Network (which supports the Love Outreach Food Pantry in Orange) wants to fill a truck with 50,000 pounds of food in September!
