On Sunday, Aug. 10, in Richmond, Alencia Johnson won the Miss Virginia American Co-ed 2008 state title. Alencia will represent Virginia at the National Pageant in Orlando, Florida, during Thanksgiving week where she will compete with young women from across the United States for the National Miss American Co-ed title. Along with the state title, she won the spirit, sportswear model, speech and photogenic awards and was awarded a crown, banner, trophy, $3,000 scholarship to a talent academy and a cash award.
Alencia is the daughter of the Rev. Tommie and Mrs. Valencia Johnson Bailey of Stafford. The Rev. Bailey is pastor of Emanuel Baptist Church in Orange.
Alencia is a senior at Christopher Newport University majoring in communications studies with a minor in leadership. Initiated in 2007 she is the president of Omicron Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and is also president of the Multicultural Student Association, member of the President’s Leadership Program and a university tour guide. She went on an alternative spring break trip to Honduras for missionary work and has recently returned from China on a study abroad trip. Alencia has interned with WTKR News Channel 3 in Norfolk and is currently interning at WTTG Fox 5 in DC. After obtaining a master’s in international affairs, her greatest dream is to impact the world as an international reporter and the founder of a leadership development organization for youth.
Alencia will use her title to promote her platform: “Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Leaders: Building a Healthy Mentality for a Brighter Future.” Her focus is to encourage young people to stay focused on their dreams, and overcome obstacles with something positive, instead of resorting to rebellion. She believes if you encourage the mind, you can save a child. Her hope is that every person will be afforded the opportunity to experience other cultures to realize our similarities instead of differences. For Alencia, her healthy mind has come from her faith in God and she thanks Him for all of her blessings.
Alencia will be making appearances throughout the state speaking to youth. She is available for public speaking engagements, parades, grand openings, ribbon-cuttings, charity events and more. For details, please email Miss or contact her mother, Valencia Bailey at 540-371-1424.
