13 teams compete at Cardboard Boat Regatta at LOW

A field of 13 boats competed in the Lake Youth Foundation’s fourth annual Cardboard Boat Regatta July 26 at Lake of the Woods. The crew of “Soggy Bottom II’ celebrate their victory in the parent and child class. This was the second consecutive win for captain Brent Pettyjohn with co-captains Ethan and Natalie Pettyjohn, Bill, Genna and William Ross. Captain Hank Lewis and co-captain Rachel Stephens win the school/civic/scout/club/business class in “Fun Bunch - Neverland.” The boat also won the people’s choice award. Scout Troop 1171 from Warrenton entered “BSS Lead Pig” in the regatta, and brought a large cheering section. On the water, “Shark Attack” powered to a victory in the age 15 -50 category. Titanic award winner Captain Elle Hayes enjoys an unplanned dip while boarding “Unadulterated Cardboard.” Emcee “Captain Dreadlocks” (AKA Otis Adgerson) and Mr. Splits entertain the audience between races. In the age 14 and under class, Michelle French took the prize in “Happy Birthday, Angela,” beating out six other competitors in the regatta’s largest class.
