The Virginia chapter of the 4-H All Stars, a service-oriented honor society devoted to positive youth development, inducted Emily Goodwin of Locust Grove into the organization on Wednesday, June 25. The annual tapping ceremony, which signaled the beginning of a lifetime of service for 68 new members, was held in conjunction with the 2008 4-H State Congress at Virginia Tech.
Virginia 4-H youth who have excelled in local 4-H involvement, 4-H agents who show a strong dedication to youth development, and exceptional volunteer leaders who have offered their time and energy to supporting the 4-H mission are all eligible to join the 4-H All Stars. From offering volunteer hours for a new 4-H club or activity to editing the 4-H All Stars newsletter “The Star” to joining the 4-H All Stars leadership team, members serve all aspects of Virginia 4-H.
The 4-H All Stars have been bringing their motto of “service” to Virginia’s youth since the Jazz Age. In 1922, a West Virginia delegate of 4-H All Stars tapped a dozen Virginia 4-H’ers into the honor society. Today, the organization stands strong with more than 9,000 names on its roster, including those of more than 600 honorary members.
Goodwin was selected as an All Star due to her service to others and participation in 4-H. She served as the 2007-08 Northern District Ambassador, representing 19 counties on the State 4-H Cabinet. She has served as president of the local 4-H Bit and Bridle Club, showed horses at district, state and regional shows, and volunteered as a 4-H camp counselor. Goodwin has volunteered for 4-H service projects, raised funds for her local club, and was recently selected to represent Virginia 4-H at the Tennessee State 4-H Congress this summer. She is a rising senior at Orange County High School and is the daughter of Wade and Beth Goodwin of Locust Grove.
Virginia 4-H engages youth ages 5 to 19 in hands-on educational programs and activities designed to help them gain the knowledge, life skills, and attitudes that will further their development as self-directing, contributing, and productive members of society.
