Head Start
April 25 – Early Head Start Play Group – 9 to 11 a.m.
Gordon-Barbour Elementary School
The winners of the Youth Art Month “Magical Kingdom” contest are: Kindergarten – Charlie Poppe, first grade – Yassmine Nesari, second grade – Kristen Lienhard, third grade – Skylar Pritchett, fourth grade – Jeremy Watson, fifth grade – Dee Rawlings
Lake of the Woods Lions Club members presented “Hearing and You” to all fourth graders. This program teaches students about the dangers of loud noise and the importance of hearing protection.
The fifth graders went on a field trip to Richmond to visit the State Capitol Building on April 22.
Volunteers from Verizon’s Telecom Pioneers visited the school April 4 and gave each student a dictionary. Thank you to Mrs. Judd, Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Willis for their time spent in bringing the dictionaries and books to our classrooms and to Verizon for having volunteers wanting to partner with schools to build better communities.
Bill Berry, principal, Mrs. Peggy Kinser and PTO co-president, Mrs. Baker, attended the Barboursville Ruritans’ April meeting. Mr. Berry offered a “State of the School” address and Mrs. Kinser spoke about volunteer opportunities at Gordon-Barbour. Mrs. Baker presented the Ruritans with Certificates of Appreciation for their donation of games for the PTO Spring Carnival. Ruritan member, Neal Robertson, used his woodworking talents to design and build the games.

April 19-27 – Eighth grade Discovery Trip to Turtle Isle, North Carolina.
Locust Grove Elementary School
Deputy Garcia Madison presented the DARE program to the fourth graders.
Transportation Department
The semiannual transportation in-service training was conducted on April 2 jointly with Louisa County Public Schools. The in-service was held at Louisa County High School and guest speaker was Dr. Boshner, a career educator. Approximately 200 transportation employees from Orange and Louisa attended. This was the first joint in-service training and the event was a success.

Orange County Public Schools third grade students will be attending Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Ag Day April 24-25. Orange Elementary and Gordon-Barbour Elementary will be attending on April 24 and Locust Grove Elementary and Lightfoot will be participating April 25. Ag Day will be held at Virginia Tech’s Northern Piedmont Agriculture Research and Extension Center in Orange.
