Brockman receives music award, Hampden-Sydney College
Hampden-Sydney College senior William Burrus Brockman received the Kearfott Stone Memorial Music Award at Final Convocation on April 22. The Kearfott Stone Memorial Award, established in 1939 by the parents of Kearfott Stone ’35, is presented to a senior who has rendered outstanding service to the cause of good music in the community.
Will, a Patrick Henry Scholar, is a member of the Hampden-Sydney Men’s Chorus, the College Republicans, the Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department and the social fraternity Phi Gamma Delta. An applied mathematics major, Will is a graduate of Woodberry Forest School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Brockman of Orange.
                       
Colvin and McClung receive degrees, PVCC
Two graduates from the Orange County Review readership were among the 373 graduates who received degrees and certificates at Piedmont Virginia Community College’s Commencement May 9. Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine addressed the graduating class and their guests at the College’s 38th annual ceremony.
The graduates included those who had completed their studies during the 2007 summer term and fall semester as well as the 2008 spring semester and summer term. Honors, or academic distinction based on a 4.0 grade point average, were cum laude (with honors) for those who earned 3.2-3.499, magna cum laude (with great honor) for 3.5-3.799, and summa cum laude (with highest degree) for 3.8-4.0.
Cynthia Colvin was awarded an Associate of Art degree in fine arts (music). She plans to enter the licensed practical nursing program at Germanna Community College. She and her spouse, Robbie, reside in Orange.
Valerie McClung, summa cum laude, of Rhoadesville, was awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree in information systems technology (web technology). A 2000 graduate of Orange County High School, she is the daughter of Donnie and Ricky McClung of Rhoadesville.
