American Legion Post 156, in Orange, hosted its annual Memorial Day ceremony Monday, May 26 at 11 a.m. in Taylor Park on Main Street in Orange. Nearly 200 veterans, family members and fellow patriots participated in the program, which honored those who gave their lives in service to their country. Following the posting of the colors by the Orange County High School JROTC, retired U.S. Navy Captain and current St. Thomas Episcopal Church Rector Lin Hutton offered the invocation. The Orange Community Band played “The Star Spangled Banner,” and those assembled recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Representatives from the Montpelier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the 13th Virginia Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, James Madison Post 2217, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 156 each laid wreaths before the Orange County’s honor roll of soldiers killed in action. Then, Post 156 members read the names of local soldiers killed in World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam, followed by the playing of “Taps.”
