The man suspected of robbing the Wilderness Center Pharmacy at gunpoint last summer is finally in police custody, according to Orange County Sheriff Mark Amos.
Amos said Hugh McClaugherty, 43, of Charles County, MD was implicated in a string of similar robberies in Maryland and in King George County, Va. Last week, a grand jury in Orange issued an indictment for robbery related to the Wilderness Pharmacy hold-up last year.
On August 17, 2006 McClaugherty walked into the pharmacy, located at 5479 Germanna Highway, brandishing a gun, and demanding drugs, deputies said.
And recently, Amos said, the suspect owned up to the charges.
“While McClaugherty was in custody, Orange County investigator Bob Canosa went to Maryland to interview the subject and was able to obtain a confession,” Amos said. The accused armed robber is in the custody of Maryland law enforcement officials currently, but will be extradited back to Orange to face charges in last year’s pharmacy robbery, Amos added.
