The Central Virginia Cattlemen Association (CVCA) will sell over 1,700 head (approximately 1,100 head on the board in trailer load lots) on Friday, Aug. 1, at 10:30 a.m. at Tucker Livestock in Radiant. All calves are weaned and double vaccinated for blackleg and respiratory diseases.
The trailer load lots of calves were weaned in mid-June and commingled and preconditioned in late June. There will be at least five single owner loads sold.
The calves sold on the board have been vaccinated with all Pfizer animal health products and qualify for the SELECT VAC program. At least one 7-way shot was given to the calves on the individual producers’ farms. The second 7-way shot used was One Shot Ultra containing Pasteurella. One Bovi-Shield shot was given when the calves were commingled. All the calves were also dewormed at weaning. Steers and heifers sold in the barn have followed the same vaccination and weaning schedule, but will not be commingled until the day before the sale and sold in the barn.
All the cattle on the board with the exception of four loads will be source and age verified with electronic tags and data will be stored in the USDA-approved Southeastern Livestock Network (SLN) PVP Program. The information is housed in the Ag-Info Link data base. Certificates documenting source and age can be provided upon request. In addition, there will be some large producer lots in the barn which are source and age verified.
The program begins at 8:30 a.m., with registration. At 9:15 a.m., welcome and introductions with Steve Hopkins and Brad Jarvis, Agriculture Extension Agents; Gary Vance, Virginia Cattle Company; and Jim Tucker, Tucker Livestock.
The morning program begins at 9:30, with “The Effects Stress has on Cattle Health” by Dr. John Currin, Virginia Tech Veterinarian. At 10:30 a.m. is the CVCA Feeder Calf Sale.
Lunch (compliments of sponsors) begins at 11:30, with the introduction of special guest at 12:45.
At 1 p.m., the afternoon program begins with “Beef Preparation Demonstration” by Butch Foster. The program adjourns at 2 p.m.
The latest in new farm equipment will be on display as well as exhibits by representatives of the agricultural industry throughout the day.
