There are many ways to describe Tess Topf: goldsmith, artist, businesswoman, horse enthusiast, and the list goes on. But to the Boys & Girls Club of Orange she is simply a gem.
Tess owns and operates Tess & Co. Jewelers on Main Street in Gordonsville. That’s where the board of the Boys & Girls Club approached her about helping to find a lapel pin to distinguish its foundation investors. Her immediate response was surprising: “Oh, that’s easy, I’ll make one for you.” And, that’s just what she did – designed and crafted an original pin from raw materials, which she then donated to the club.
“I love to make jewelry, it’s not just my business, it’s my passion,” states Topf, who’s new business opened in Gordonsville only five months ago. “Starting a business is very demanding, but how can you resist helping a group that devotes its time and limited resources assisting so many local kids?”
“I’m constantly reminded of how good people really are,” states Mary Lew Sponski, Boys & Girls Club of Orange board president.  “Attracting foundation investors is a new and very important initiative for us and this pin is an inspiring symbol I know they will wear with pride.”
Foundation investors are individuals who essentially pay the cost of supporting a child in the club for a year – about $4 a day. The club serves over 300 youth, year-round, with supplemental education, and programs that build character, judgment, and good citizenship skills. Ultimately, the club’s goal is to enlist 200 foundation investors. “Having 200 foundation investors will make us self-reliant, then anything we raise through special events will help us build a much-needed financial cushion,” says Sponski.
Topf is now busy having the prototype pin manufactured. It is slated for completion and distribution to foundation investors prior to this year’s annual fundraising gala, to be held at Bending River June 21.
