An Orange boy was killed Sunday afternoon after he was struck riding his bicycle on Monrovia Road.
According to Virginia State Police Sgt. F.L. Tyler, Stephen Caleb Smith, 15, was riding his bicycle eastbound on Route 612 when a 2003 Chevrolet Impala approached him from the rear.
“The vehicle moved in the oncoming lane to go around the bicyclist,” Sgt. Tyler reported. “It was in a passing zone.”
As the vehicle moved to pass, the bicyclist made a left-hand turn toward Kerby Drive, Sgt. Tyler said.
The vehicle struck Smith who died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.
Smith was wearing headphones while riding on the roadway, Sgt. Tyler reported.
Sgt. Tyler did not release a name on the driver of the Impala, but noted she was a 50-year-old woman from Orange.
No charges were filed and none are pending, he said.
The accident was investigated by S.J. Riddle.
