Gordon-Barbour Elementary School
On May 15, the second graders will take a field trip to Ashlawn-Highland, the presidential home of James Monroe.
In honor of National Nurses Week, the staff donned nursing caps.
On May 21, the kindergarten class will visit the Charlottesville Performing Arts Center.
Ms. Joyce Shoultz, the school nurse, received a check for $1,000 from the Wal-Mart Community Involvement Program. These funds will be used to supplement materials and equipment for the health program, to include additional equipment for the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Congratulations, Ms. Shoultz!

Orange County High School
The 71 students of the Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School will present the results of their year-long senior internships and projects at the Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School (BRVGS) Senior Exposition, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon May 15, at the Best Western Hotel in Zion Crossroads in Louisa. The BRVGS is a regional academic-year governor’s school that included the counties of Greene, Nelson, Orange, Fluvanna, Louisa and Goochland. BRVGS seniors will present information on their independent research topics, as well as on any related internships and community service, all in a “science fair” format. Parents, educators, community members and media representatives are invited to attend. Students will be evaluated on the content of their materials, on their ability to answer questions related to their experiences and on their ability to present themselves and their topics professionally. The Orange County High School Varsity Baseball team, coached by Mr. Jesse Lohr, has started a program that works with Little League baseball teams throughout the county. After practice, the high school athletes volunteer to stay and work with the Little League teams on fundamental baseball skills: catching, throwing, base running and hitting. This program is in the beginning stages and will be expanded next year.

Unionville Elementary School
The Spring Fling will be held on May 16 from 5:30-8 p.m. Admission is $1 per person or $5 per family. The theme this year is “UES – Fabulous at Fifty.” The community is encouraged to join Unionville for the 50th anniversary celebration. The celebration will be featuring music and trivia from the 1950s and all adults and children are encouraged to dress in ‘50s attire. Artifacts will be on display for the public to view as well as a hula hoop contest, a soda fountain complete with teachers serving on roller skates, an Elvis booth, antique cars, cake walk, root beer floats and many other activities and games. Every child will receive a commemorative keepsake.

Prospect Heights Middle School
May 15, 7 p.m. – Spring Band Concert

Locust Grove Elementary School and Locust Grove Middle School
The Special games were held in Culpeper on May 2. Students from Locust Grove Elementary and Locust Grove Middle participated.

Taylor Education Administration Complex
Preschool Development Screenings will be held on May 16, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. All children ages birth to 5 years will receive a free developmental screening. Language, motor, concept development, hearing and vision will be screened for all children. No appointment necessary.

SOL Testing begins May 13 for grades 3-5, May 15 for middle school and May 23 for Orange County High School.
Sports physicals will be offered for middle and high school students on May 21 at the Hornet Sports Center. Cost is $20. Students arrive at 6 p.m. Physicals will begin at 6:30 p.m.
May 12-16 is National School Transportation Week. Thank you to all of our transportation departments for safely transporting our students.
