Locust Grove Elementary School
May 29 - Students in grades 1-5 will perform a spring program for each other at 2 p.m. in the gym. Kindergarten students will also attend.
Ms. Davis’ fourth grade class held their “Metric Olympics.” The Metric Olympics gives the students the opportunity to estimate and measure in the metric system.  The students worked in teams to compete in events such as the Big Foot Competition (what’s the area of your foot in square centimeters?), the Right Hand Marble Grab (how many grams of marbles can you grab in one hand?), the Sponge Squeeze (how many milliliters of water can you squeeze from a sponge?), and to measure distance in centimeters there were the Cotton Ball Shotput, the Paper Plate Discus and the Paper Straw Javelin Throw.  Parent volunteers helped the students at each center.

Orange County High School
The Orange County High School Chorus traveled to Six Flags for a chorus competition. The chorus received an “excellent” rating and placed first in their division.
May 29 - Jazz Ensemble Concert, 7 p.m.

Locust Grove Middle School
May 29 - 8th grade Rappahannock River hike
May 30 - 7th and 8th grade band and chorus trip to Kings Dominion

Gordon-Barbour Elementary School
First grade is having an end of the year slide show celebration of the great work and good times the students have had this year. Parents are invited to watch the slide show and have dessert on May 29 at 7 p.m.
Ms. Young’s second grade students will be treated to a “nacho” party as a reward for the most number of “super days” in art.
The second graders recently visited Ash Lawn-Highland, the home of the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe. Each of the three classes had a tour of the house, the farm, and made a “make and take” craft. The day ended with playtime at McIntire Park. A fun time was had by all.
Field Day - June 4, rain date will be June 5
The staff and students are very proud of their school counselor, Karen McKean, who was named as Orange County Public Schools Teacher of the Year!

Prospect Heights Middle School
The Prospect Heights Middle School Youth Leadership meeting held May 17 at Orange County High School was a huge success. Seventeen young men participated in the leadership forum which consisted of school and community speakers, and sessions on developing leadership skills. Breakfast and lunch was provided for the participants. Their participation was outstanding and will help in planning a process for developing leaders in the middle and high schools.

Market Day
On May 30, the Orange County Public Schools Gifted Resource teachers are sponsoring a Market Day for all 2nd and 3rd graders in the county. This event will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Hornet Sports Center. Approximately 800 children will be involved in this economic simulation of the Free Market Economy. Following the event the Gifted Resource teachers will sponsor a mini workshop to share ideas about Market Day simulations with educators from surrounding counties. The workshop will take place at the Taylor Education Administration Complex from approximately 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
