To the editor,
I am astounded to learn that Orange County officials are even considering a proposal to allow Wal-Mart to build a store across from the Wilderness Battlefield. Don’t they realize the importance of that site? Don’t they understand that tens of thousands of people come to Orange County every year to learn about the battle?
If we destroy the battlefield, those tourists will take their money and go elsewhere. The Wilderness Battlefield is a golden egg-laying goose and they’re crazy to think about killing it by building a Wal-Mart on that hallowed ground. If the supervisors are truly bent on having this Wal-Mart in the county (and I think the jury is still out on whether we need it), the smart thing to do would be to move it five or 10 miles away, where its impact on the battlefield will be minimized. That way, everybody wins.
