To the editor,
I read with great interest the article, “Gordonsville and the Guptons” in the Orange County Review Insider, Feb. 21, by Phil Audibert.
The article was well written. The Guptons have certainly done wonderful things for the town and I enjoy going there.
However, with no disrespect to the Guptons, I feel that I must correct an error or at least clarify one statement in the article. Under the picture of the town park, it says “The Guptons also established a town park on the west side of South Main Street, featuring elaborate stone carvings by French artisan, Didier Chene.”
I do not dispute the elaborate stone carvings. They are beautiful. But the park was established by the town to honor Mr. William A. Cooke, who gave the property for the park, as well as for the new town hall and police station. In addition, the William A. Cooke Foundation made a grant to the town to cover the cost of building the park.
The town is planning a dedication ceremony, along with a plaque naming the park in honor of Mr. Cooke.
