With the introduction of our new county registrar in this week’s edition of the Orange County Review, it seems like a good time to consider the upcoming local election calendar.
It wasn’t that long ago that Orange County was embroiled in tightly contested (and contentious) supervisor and school board races.
Those days may be behind us, but others are just ahead.
This fall, Orange County voters will fill two school board and supervisor seats. Because both boards have concurrent staggered terms, the District 1 and District 4 seats on each are eligible for election this fall.
Certainly, there will be plenty for voters and potential candidates to consider in the interim.
Sweeping job cuts, budget reductions and administrative reorganization have prompted a renewed interest in the workings of local government and the school division. Couple that with the construction of a new $33 million middle school amid a bleak economic climate and suddenly a lot more folks become interested in local politics.
The qualifications for candidates are fairly simple: be a registered voter and live in the district you want to represent. Applicable experience is helpful, but not necessary. A genuine interest in public service is critical. A keen mind, able to comprehend and digest complex scenarios is essential. Commitment, creativity and progressive thinking are absolutely vital.
Candidates have two months to file their paperwork. The deadline to be on the ballot is June 9.
Lets give our voters viable choices among qualified candidates come election day.
