The Orange County High School varsity Hornets entered the Jefferson District Playoffs with an impressive record of 11-8.
In the first round of the Jefferson District Playoffs on Friday night, Orange took on Monticello at home.
Orange came out on top with a 6-5 victory in an extra inning battle.
The Hornets had a seemingly permanent 3-1 lead until the top of the seventh inning, when Monticello rallied to score two runs and tie the game.
Orange couldn’t come up with anything in their half of the seventh, dragging the game into the eighth inning. Monticello scored two more runs to take the lead 5-3, but Orange didn’t lose hope.
The Hornets came in and started a rally of their own in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lazaro Torres drove in two runs to tie the game at 5-5.
Nelson Vargas had the game-winning walk-off base hit to score Luke Dulin and win the ball game, with a final score of 6-5.
Orange suffered two losses from the last two regular season games; one against Western 8-2 and the other against Louisa 4-3.
The District Playoffs continue Tuesday night, with Orange County taking on Louisa away.
