Field hockey opens with shutout wins

Orange scored three first-half goals, including two in the first 10 minutes, in a 5-0 blanking of Liberty-Bealteton in high school field hockey.
The Hornets got goals from four different players in Thursday’s shutout victory in Orange.
Junior Annie Heyl scored twice, while junior Kayla Hooper, senior Mary Gillum and junior Olivia Newman each found the back of the goal for the Hornets.
Heyl and senior Lea Lawson recorded assists.
The Hornets outshot the visiting Eagles 21-2 and spent much of the day peppering Liberty’s defense.
Three days earlier, Elizabeth Higginbotham and Hooper each scored as the varsity field hockey team opened its 2008 season with a 2-0 shutout win over Spotsylvania.
Sophomore Rachel Gardner and senior Rebecca Dulin each recorded assists in the win.
Orange outshot the host Knights 6-2, with new Hornet goalie Toni Tribble blocking both shots.
