Orange County High School senior Hunter Weaver finished in fourth place Tuesday and qualified for regional play at the Jefferson District Golf Tournament.
Weaver, a first-team all-district selection, shot a two-over par 72 at Meadowcreek to cement his place in the upcoming regional event.
As a team, the Hornets finished sixth out of seven teams in the district tournament.
Weaver’s 72 led the Hornets, who got a 90 from Tanner Zastrow, a 93 from Josh Pugh and a 94 from Skip Strickler to post a team score of 349, two strokes better than last-place Charlottesville. Western Albemarle won the match with a team score 298. Monticello was second (313) as both of those teams qualified for the regional tournament.
Weaver will play on as one of six individuals who qualified, including district player of the year Mikey Moyers of William Monroe. Moyers beat Weaver in a playoff to finish third in Tuesday’s match, bumping Weaver to fourth. Both shot 72 in regulation. Western’s Patrick Leisure and Monticello’s Kevin Archer each shot 71, though Leisure edged Archer in a playoff for medalist honors.
As a team, the Hornets’ season ended with Tuesday’s match.
In last week’s action, Weaver shot 75, but only one of his teammates broke 100 as the Hornet golf team placed sixth in the 10th annual Woodberry Forest/Orange County Invitational Golf Tournament Friday.
Weaver finished one stroke back of event co-medalists, Woodberry’s Johnny Kyger and Thomas Walter, on the par 70 Woodberry course.
Zach Yowell shot a season-best 89 for the next-best Hornet score. Brandon Twigg shot 100 and Skip Strickler 101 to give Orange a top-four score of 365. Josh Pugh and Tanner Zastrow each shot 104 for the Hornets, but did not factor in the scoring.
Orange’s 365 team score placed it ahead of Charlottesville (366) and Culpeper (380) in the eight-team event. Woodberry’s A (298) and B (334) squads finished first and second. Western Albemarle was third (336), followed by Covenant (343) and Monticello (353).
Wednesday afternoon, the Hornets got a one-over-par 37 from event medalist Hunter Weaver as Orange edged Culpeper at Culpeper Country Club.
Led by Weaver’s round, the Hornets beat Culpeper 183-185 to improve to 5-16-1 overall. Brandon Twigg shot 43, Josh Pugh 50 and Skip Strickler 53 for the Hornets’ to four scores. Tanner Zastrow (54) and Zach Yowell (55) did not factor in the scoring for the Hornets.
