The Orange County High School varsity boys soccer team needs to win a make-up game with William Monroe Wednesday to secure a Jefferson District regular season championship and a Region II tournament berth.
The Hornets took another step closer to the Jefferson District regular season title beating then co-district leader Western Albemarle 3-1 Monday night.
Antonio Flores got the Hornets on the scoreboard first, off an assist from Evan Bond. Schuyler Whelan scored the game-winning second goal on an assist from Flores. Matt Cronin finalized the scoring with a goal off a throw-in from Adam Jacques.
The win followed Thursday’s 2-0 blanking of Louisa which set up Monday’s showdown.
The Hornets head to Stanardsville for Wednesday’s make-up game at 12-1-2.
Even if the Hornets fail to beat the Greene Dragons, they’ll still have the Jefferson District tournament to earn a Region II playoff berth.
Meanwhile, the Hornets’ JV squad can earn a championship for themselves if they too beat the Dragons Wednesday. Monday, the JV boys beat Western 2-1 to position themselves the same as the varsity club. If they beat William Monroe Wednesday, they’ll play in the JV championship Friday.
