On Saturday, the girls dominated the tournament at St. Anne’s-Belfield, beating both Eastern Mennonite and St. Anne’s in shutout games, improving their record to 5-2 on their way to the tournament title.
In the game against St. Anne’s, the Hornet batters commanded the game and won 14-0. Junior pitcher Heather Jenkins faced 17 batters, striking out six, and allowing only one hit. Runs were scored by Cali Allen, Alicia Humes, Heather Jenkins, Mandi Murphy, Paige Pritchett, Michala Sacra, Kate Searcy, and Tina Spencer.
In the second game of the tournament, the girls dominated at the plate once again, driving in run after run to beat Eastern Mennonite 10-0. Jenkins had 10 strikeouts and again, allowed only one hit. Runs were scored by Megan Roberts, Sacra, Spencer, and Alicia Washington.
Great teamwork and impressive batting allowed the Hornets to bring home their trophy. Jenkins was individually named MVP in the tournament for her impressive performance both on the mound and at bat.
In their district-opener last Thursday, the OCHS varsity softball team played an impressive game, beating out the Flucos 3-1 Wednesday night in Fluvanna.
The excitement started in the second inning when senior Mandi Murphy had an RBI single to bring in the freshman pitcher, Michala Sacra, who’d been walked earlier.
In the top of the third, the Hornets stayed focused and scored their second run bringing the Hornets ahead, 2-0. Sophomore Paige Pritchett had a sacrifice bunt driving home senior Alicia Humes from third. Rallying back in the bottom of the third, the Flucos managed a run of their own making the score 2-1.
Securing the win in the fourth, Humes had a beautiful triple that brought in senior Alisha Washington resulting in a final score of 3-1.
Sacra had 13 strikeouts. Orange had 10 hits in the game and Sacra gave up only 3 hits to the Flucos.
