Heather Jenkins and Micalah Sacre combined on a one-hit shutout Thursday to give the Hornets a Jefferson District title sweep.
The Orange County High School varsity softball girls beat Monticello 1-0 Thursday in Fluvanna to give the Hornets a Jefferson District Tournament title to go with their regular season district title.
The girls (19-3) hosted a Region II tournament home game Wednesday night (after presstime).
After beating Louisa in the tournament semifinals last Tuesday, the Hornets found themselves facing the only team to hand them a district loss this season-Monticello.
The two teams split the regular season series, each winning on the other’s home field. This time, on a neutral site, the Hornets used a solid pitching effort-and just enough hitting-to win again.
Orange got the only run it’d need in the second inning.
Jenkins led off with a triple and scored on Megan Roberts’ double. A Sacre single was the Hornets’ only other hit against the Mustangs’ Victoria Scott, who struck out 13 in the loss.
Meanwhile, Jenkins set the Mustangs down in order in both the first and the second, before yielding to Sacre. The sophomore struck out the side in the third, but ran into trouble in the top of the fourth.
After Brittney Via walked and stole second, Casey Burruss popped up a bunt to Tina Spencer. Via stole third and Sacre walked Victoria Scott, who later stole second. With two in scoring position and only one out, the Hornet hurler settled down and struck out the next two batters to end Monticello’s only scoring threat.
Jenkins came back on in the fifth and shut the Mustangs down in order before giving up a lead-off singled to start the sixth. A caught-stealing and two groundouts later and Jenkins gave way to Sacre to close it out in the ninth. She did it in fine fashion, fanning the side to secure the win. The two combined on a one-hit shutout, striking out nine–eight by Sacre.
