The girls maintained a strong defense Friday night away in Greene to scorch the William Monroe Dragons 4-2.
Initially, it looked like Greene had the upper hand as they scored in the first inning and took a 1-0 lead.
By the third inning, the Hornets started to turn the game around when third baseman Tina Spencer was walked.  Up next, shortstop Michala Sacre hit a single, advancing Spencer to second.  Then, catcher Paige Pritchett smacked the ball away for a double that brought home Spencer and Sacre, making the score 2-1.
Spencer hit an RBI in the fourth that brought home outfielder Alicia Humes, widening the gap, 3-1.
In an attempt to rally back in the sixth, the Dragons scored another run to make it 3-2.
Securing the win for the Hornets, Humes stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and drove the ball away for a beautiful home run making the final score 4-2.
The Hornets’ record improved to 14-4 and 7-2 in the district making them second in the district.
The varsity softball team played Fluvanna at home Thursday night sending the Flucos flying, 2-1.
Freshman pitcher Michala Sacre held back the Flucos recording 13 strikeouts in the game.
Both teams put up all of their runs in the first inning.
In the top of the inning the Flucos scored off of an error by the Hornets.  Not wanting to wait to secure a victory, the Hornets fired back in the bottom of the inning to score their only two runs of the game.
Sacre got the inning started by advancing to first after being hit by a pitch.  Following her, was catcher Paige Pritchett who hit a nice single that moved Sacre to second.  Next up, shortstop Heather Jenkins smacked a beautiful double that brought Sacre home tying the score, 1-1.  Second baseman Megan Roberts stepped up to the plate next, and knocked out a single that drove Pritchett home.
The win brought the team’s record to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in the district.
Wednesday night in Orange, the Hornets’ softball team trampled the Black Knights 22-0.  Their overwhelming victory was primarily due to many walks and stolen bases.
The team had a total of 15 hits throughout the game.
Senior Alisa Washington helped lead the team to victory on the mound striking out five batters and allowing for only three hits.
Runs were scored by junior Cali Allen, junior Kayla Cable, senior Alicia Humes, junior Heather Jenkins, freshman Mandi Murphy, sophomore Paige Pritchett, junior Megan Roberts, freshman Michala Sacre, junior Kate Searcy, junior Tina Spencer, and senior Alisa Washington.
The Hornets played a clean game with no errors.  The game was called after the fifth inning due to the slaughter rule.  The win improved their overall record to 12-4 and moved them up in the district 5-2.
