The Orange County High School boys tennis team split two matches early this week, blanking King George 9-0, but falling to Charlottesville 5-4.
Hosting the Black Knights Tuesday, Orange won two matches on the court and two others by forfeit, but couldn’t win the clinching fifth match that would have secured the victory.
The loss put the boys’ record at 8-6, 3-6 in the district.
In singles play, Charlottesville’s Fred Haar beat Rob Johnson 8-6 in a match-up of top seeds.
Sam Barry beat Orange’s Michael Kayajanian 8-5. David Woodside beat Brendon Chambers 8-3.
Fourth seed Braden Jones got the Hornets on the board with his 8-6 win over Wills Dahl.
Drew Petterson beat Orange’s Daniel Hawkins 8-5, but the Hornets “won” the sixth-seeded match by forfeit because Charlottesville couldn’t field a sixth-seed.
In doubles play, Johnson and Kayajanian teamed to beat Haar and Barry 8-6.
Woodside and Petterson beat Chambers and Logan Hanley 8-6.
Orange won the third doubles match by forfeit when the Knights couldn’t put a team on the court.
Monday, the boys swept their matches with King George as coach Sara Haney offered some of her other players a chance to get some experience.
Johnson beat Brandon Scarpow 10-2.
Chambers beat Kyle Allwine 10-3.
Shawn Kim, playing out of the three seed Monday, beat Brian Murphy 11-10, winning the tiebreaker 10-8.
Zach Upchurch beat Kris Rogers 10-4.
Luke Joback beat Kody Provencher 10-1.
Orange won the sixth-seeded match because the Foxes didn’t have enough players.
In doubles, Kayajanian and Jones beat Allwine and Murphy 10-2, while Hanley teamed with Hawkins to beat Scarpow and Rogers 10-4. The Hornets won the third-seeded doubles match by forfeit as well.
Orange next travels to Louisa to conclude regular season play.
