The 2008 tennis season ended last week for Orange County High School’s top singles players and doubles teams.
Thursday afternoon at Boar’s Head Inn Sports Club, Orange top seeds Rob Johnson and Brittney Squires represented the Hornets in the Jefferson District singles tournament.
Johnson put up a good fight against Charlottesville’s Sam Barry, but lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Johnson won the first set, but dropped the next two in a tight match.
Barry eventually lost to Western Albemarle’s Joey Manilla 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.
For the girls, Squires made it close in the second set, but lost to Monticello’s A. Wagner 6-1, 6-4.
Wagner lost to Western’s Shannon Bayliss 6-2, 6-2, giving the Warriors a sweep of Jefferson District singles titles.
Still, the Hornets had another day of tennis to play.
Johnson and doubles partner Michael Kayajanian faced Western’s Manilla and Fitts Friday at Boar’s Head.
Unfortunately, for the Orange duo, they couldn’t compete with the mighty Warriors, falling 6-0, 6-1 to the eventual Jefferson District doubles champions.
On the girls side, Squires and doubles partner Becca Hanley faced Monticello’s A. Wagner and E. Wagner, but lost by the same score as the boys, 6-0, 6-1. Western’s girls doubles team also won the tournament giving the Warriors a sweep of all the Jefferson District titles.
