Hornet track teams off to solid start

Orange track star Logan Collins broke a 32-year-old school record and the Hornets’ teams finished among the top six at the Gus Lacy Track Classic at Fork Union Saturday.
Nearly two dozen schools of all sizes participated in the invitational meet, with the Orange girls placing fourth and the boys sixth.
The highlight of the meet was Collins’ 800 meter race, where he finished first in a time of 1:54.61. According to Orange track coach Renee Almond, Collins broke the record set by Kent Schweikert (1:57.7) set in 1976.
The time qualified Collins for the state meet.
In other boys action, Jeff Carey won the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.36. His time qualified him for the state meet.
Kevin Pearson qualified for the state meet with a second-place finish in the 100 meters (11.13). He also qualified for the state meet with a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters in a time of 22.90.
In the high jump, Pearson placed fifth (5’ 10”) and he was sixth in the long jump (20’ 5 ½”).
The boys collected 32 ½ points and finished sixth. Host Fork Union won with 65 points.
For the girls, Ashontae Jackson qualified for the Region II meet with a time of 26.73 in winning the 200 meters.
Nicole Walters placed sixth in the 400 meters (1:02.69).
Lynnie Bresnahan was fourth in the 300 hurdles and broke her own school record (49.84). She was third in high jump (4’ 8”), fourth in long jump (15’ 10 ¼”) and third in triple jump (33’ 11 ¾”).
Walters, Bresnahan, Jackson and Kayla Jones teamed to finish fourth in the 4 x 400 meter relay event, running 4:09.07, setting a new school record and qualifying for the state meet.
Overall, the girls collected 34 points to finish fourth. AAA school Manchester won the meet with 130 points.
The girls got their first team win of the season before spring break, edging Albemarle 72-67.
Bresnahan was a one-girl wrecking crew, racking up six first-place finishes to lead the Hornets. She won the 100 meter hurdles, the 300 hurdles, the high jump, long jump, triple jump and shot put. She also placed second in discus.
She also teamed with Walters, Jackson and Jones to win the 4 x 400 relay.
Jackson won the 100 meters and the 200 meters.
Kathryn Baker won the 800 meters and was third in the 1600 meters.
Walters won the 400 meters.
Jones was third in the 200 meters.
Gabrielle Holloway was third in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles.
Kelsey Gibby and Jessica Hensley finished second and third in the 3200 meters, respectively.
Erica Barge was third in the shot put.
Among the boys events, Orange tallied 61 points, but host Albemarle won with 79.
Carey was first in the 110 hurdles and in the 300 hurdles.
Teammate Lamar Gordon placed second in both.
The Hornets’ relay teams were particularly effective, as the Orange boys won the 4 x 100 meters and the 4 x 400 meter events.
In the 4 x 100, Ellis, Pearson, Reggie Spencer and Deandrea Stokes ran 44.3 to win. In the 4 x 400, Michael Johnson, Gordon, Evan Walters and Chris Lewis teamed to run 3:40.8.
Johnson was third in the 400 meters, while Walters won the 800 meters.
Pearson was second in the 200 meters, while Ellis was third.
Drew Wallace and Paul Ciskanik placed second and third in the 3200 meters, respectively.
Pearson was second in long jump, third in high jump and second in triple jump.
Gordon was third in long jump.
Phillip Barge was third in shot put.
The Hornets swept the discus event, with James Harris taking first, Wayne Wright second and Lewis Daniel third.
At the end of March, the Hornet teams participated in a tri-meet with Louisa and Monticello.
The Hornet girls placed second, while the boys finished third.
In the girls events,
Walters, Jones, Shauna Prasse and Virginia Peck teamed to win the 4 x 800.
Jackson was first in the 400 meters and second in the 200 meters.
Erica Nixon won the shot put and the discus events.
Bresnahan won the 300 hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump, was second in the discus and second in the 100 hurdles.
Peck was third in the 1600 meters.
Walters won the 800 meters.
Andrea King was third in the 100 hurdles while Holloway was fourth.
The 4 x 400 relay team of Walters, Bresnahan, Jackson and Jones won in 4:11.3.
The girls collected 61 points, finishing well ahead of Monticello (37), but just behind the host Lions (70).
The boys collected 40 points, finishing third behind Louisa (93) and Monticello (46).
Pearson won the 100 meters and the long jump and finished third in high jump and triple jump.
Carey claimed the 100 hurdles and was third in the 300 hurdles.
Ellis was third in the 100 and 200 meter events.
Collins won the 400 meters in a time of 50.5.
Chris Lewis was second in the 800 meters, just ahead of teammate Nick Talbert.
Wright was third in the discus.
The 4 x 800 relay team of Collins, Avery Powell, Talbert and Lewis placed second.
The Hornets hosted William Monroe in their only home meet of the season Wednesday afternoon (after presstime).
