Hornets start golf season

Orange County High School finished in fourth place Monday afternoon at the Spring Creek Invitational.
Hunter Weaver shot 83 to lead Orange and tie for the second-lowest round on the par 72 Zion Crossroads layout.
Powhatan shot a cumulative four-golfer score of 361, followed by host Monticello’s 363. Harrisonburg was third (369), with Orange fourth (397). Madison finished fifth (432).
Weaver and Josh Pugh (98) were the only Hornets to break 100. Skip Stricker (105) and Brandon Twigg (111) had the other qualifying scores for the Hornets. Zachary Yowell shot 116, but his score was not counted among the top four.
Harrisonburg’s Kyle Bourne was the event medalist, shooting a six-over 78.
OCHS finished last in a Jefferson District mini match Tuesday afternoon at Spring Creek Golf Club in Zion Crossroads.
The match, hosted by Monticello on the par 72 layout, was the opening event of the season for the Hornets.
Weaver shot 79 to lead Orange, but got little help from his teammates-none of whom broke 100 on the Golf Digest-honored course.
Weaver opened with a 38 and shot 41 on the back nine to post the third-lowest score of the tournament. William Monroe’s Mikey Moyers was medalist with a three-over 75.
The top four scores for each team are combined to create a cumulative team score. In addition to Weaver’s 79, the Hornets used a 112 from Strickler, a 118 from Twigg and a 122 from Yowell for a team total 431.
Western Albemarle won Tuesday’s meet with a score of 318, followed by Monroe at 331 and Monticello at 334. Fluvanna was fourth (379), Louisa fifth (401), Charlottesville sixth (403) and Orange seventh.
